Tuesday may have been a first for a girls golf meet in the state of Nebraska. The Valentine Girls Golf Invitational at Frederick Peak Golf Course was shortened to nine holes after a mountain lion was spotted on the course.

After discussing the matter with coaches of the teams participating, Valentine High School Activities Director Blake Beebout made the call to suspend the tournament after nine holes out of an abundance of caution.

The adult mountain lion was spotted on a camera in a canyon off the ninth green. It did not pose an immediate threat to any golfers at any point.

Results from the meet were:

Sunday, Sept. 3

The team of Steve Camp, Jake Friedrich, Carter Camp and Cordell Nilson shot a total score of 52 under par to win the annual Bassett Country Club Labor Day four-person 4-under scramble Sunday.

In the format, each player has a chance to record a score on each scramble hole, so a team could have four birdies on one hole. The 52-under score on 18 holes was good for a nine-shot victory over the team of Brady Foster, Adam Schueth, Allen Schueth and Mark Steskal. That team finished with a score of 43-under par. The team of Clay Fischer, Keian Fischer, Bradd Bussinger and Corby Fischer shot a 41-under par round for third in the championship flight.

In the first flight, the team of Kasey Foster, Kelsi Schueth, Joe Lutz and Butch Fischer shot a round of 17-under par to edge the team of Lacey Friedrich, Jacob Maurer, Claire Franzen and Bryant LeZotte by one shot. The team of Justin Dearmont, Britt Hollenbeck, Jhett Hollenbeck and Lexi Christensen took third in the flight with a score of 10-under par.
